POLK COUNTY

Established in 1846, Polk County was named after our 11th President, James Polk. Its 592 square miles includes the city of Des Moines; the county seat and state capital, and 15% of the states population.

I had thought that Polk County might be a challenge for this project but turns out there’s still plenty of outdoor space and nature inside city limits and along its outskirts. A fact that I was happy to make note of because it means that even the urban areas are aware of the benefits of green spaces.

Polk County is actually abundant in beautiful natural places that allow you to immerse yourself in nature. With everything from bike trails to marshes, woods to wildlife areas, it is a cornucopia of adventure and exploration.

Chichaqua Bottoms

This 8,388 acres of prairie, woodlands and wetlands is an outdoor enthusiasts dream. Located in the Northeast corner of Polk County, this greenbelt stretches nearly 10 miles along the Skunk River. It includes bird blind rentals, a popular dog training area and some of the prettiest walking trails in Iowa.

Purple Martin Water Resource Area

This is one of my favorite places to wander. Partly because it’s close to me and also because it isn’t, I don’t think, a place many people know about. Located on the Southwestern corner of Polk County, its just a beautiful space abundant with native plants and a well cared for trail that allows for a lazy morning walk.

Southwoods Park

This park will make you forget that you’re right smack in the middle of one of Des Moines largest suburbs. Located in West Des Moines, Southwoods offers a beautiful escape from the surrounding busy-ness. An 18-hole disc golf course weaves its way in and along the parks trails and the abundance of wildflowers and vegetation offer a serene backdrop that is both surprising and relaxing.
