LUCAS COUNTY

Established in 1846, Lucas County was named after Robert Lucas, the Governor of the territory at the time. Between the gorgeous spring redbuds at Red Haw State Park and delightful views of Iowa’s first rails-to-trails along Cinder Path, I have come to love this beautiful county.

My first experience with Lucas County was a visit several years ago to Red Haw State Park. I was captivated by the photos I had seen of its abundant redbuds, I was not disappointed.

Subsequent visits have taken me to trails, forests and marshes. Lucas County is one of those quiet, laid back, unassuming places that offers surprising vistas, flourishing forests and abundant opportunities for exploring the outdoors.

Cinder Path Bike Trail

Iowa’s first rails-to-trails, this 14 mile converted railroad is a mix of cinder, grass and limestone. Winding its way along the Chariton River Valley from Chariton to Humeston. It offers a variety of scenic views from woodlands to prairies. If you’re planning a visit I highly recommend wider bike tires and boots if it’s rainy and you’re walking but a little mud is worth this adventure.

Red Haw State Park

One of my favorite places on earth in the early spring! Red Haw is 649 acres of beautiful trails alongside a serene 70-acre lake. With five open shelters, an historic stone shelter built by the CCC and several open picnic areas, it’s wonderful place to enjoy a perfect spring day. If you’re wanting to catch the redbuds I suggest an early to mid-May visit.

Stephens State Forest

At 15,500 acres, and 7 units that stretching over 5 counties, Stephens is Iowa’s largest state forest. First developed in the 1930’s with trees planted by the Civilian Conservation Corps, Stephens is a prime example of forest management for Iowa woodland species. The Lucas Unit, in Lucas County offers 5 miles of hiking trails that are also used for cross-country skiing and mountain biking.
