CERRO GORDO COUNTY

Located in north central Iowa, Cerro Gordo County was not exactly part of my 2024 plans but a visit to Art Farm Iowa in Northwood, seemed like an opportunity to good to pass up. While my excursions were limited on time, each has left me wishing for another, much slower adventure to this land of prairies, marshes and wildlife areas.

With over 37 parks, prairies, wildlife areas and marshes, Cerro Gordo County is a treasure trove of outdoor exploration. Conservation efforts to restore and integrate prairies with wetlands and woodlands and create habit for wildlife has built this rural landscape into an outdoor enthusiasts dream. What I really appreciate is the diversity of parks, prairies, preserves and wildlife areas across the county. While enjoyable, a day trip just does not do this beautiful part of our state justice.

Kuhn Wildlife Area

Located in the northwest corner of the county, peaceful is the best way to describe this unassuming 80 acres. A delightful grass path leads you alongside a picturesque fishing pond on one side and a wild prairie plot on the other. Late summer offered me ideal weather and the hint of fall color. With the exception of a variety of birds and couple rabbits, I enjoyed a quiet morning stroll to myself.

McIntosh Woods State Park

After the solitary feel of Kuhn, arriving at McIntosh Woods was a nice welcome back into civilization. Located just to the west of Clear Lake, McIntosh offers camping, fishing, swimming, boating, kayaking and host of other amenities, including yurts. I loved taking a short walk along one of the hiking trails and photographing from the edge of the lake. I encountered several other park goers and their pets but its sheer size afforded me plenty of quiet.

Mallard Marsh & Swamp Area

Arriving at Mallard Marsh just before sundown I felt as though I was ending the my day the way it had begun, peacefully. Simple and strait forward, Mallard Marsh offers no amenities outside the beauty of it and its rural surroundings. Though I do think I saw a small entry point for fishing boats, the trolling motor type. I know these spaces are not everyone’s cup of tea but to me their simplicity and reclusive nature are the best places to reflect, enjoy a moment of silence and breathe deeply.
