Fall…Ohhh…Me! Day 37

I love hiking. I hate bugs. So, this has become my absolute favorite time of year for hiking. While I still encounter an occasional spider web (Eeek!), the cooler weather and less dense foliage make for an almost pest free adventure. Almost…

Fall…Ohhh…Me! Day 36

Libraries…bookstores…the overflowing moving boxes at garage sales…I have had a love for books and reading since I can remember. At the age of 6-years-old I can remember coming home after a Saturday spent combing garage sales with my grandmother, carrying an overwhelming stack of books that we bought for less than a dollar. There were novels, an art-photography book and college math and physics books. Like most kids cling to a blanket or teddy bear I hauled that physics book everywhere. Pouring over the pages of words I couldn’t begin to pronounce much less know what they meant. I loved that book. I loved the feel of the pages as I would leaf through, letting them fall slowly then fanning through them faster…the smell of paper and glue…even the hard bound cover was a comfort to me.

Sadly, the physics portion did not transfer through osmosis to my mathematically challenged brain but my love of the words and reading and a books ability to clear my thoughts has never waned. If I’m stressed, one of my favorite places to go is the library or a book store. Just the feel, sight and smell of the books brings me peace.

With the onset of cooler weather and less time to get outside with my camera, this becomes my escape.¬†With fall in the air I find that I pay more attention to book reviews and love the rush of finding a quick selling title that seems to literally be flying off the shelves. More often than not, I am disappointed when I actually go to read it but for some reason that only feeds my need to continue to search for then next great review. When I find one that truly is great…aahhh, sweet victory.

It has been a while since I have found such a book so I feel compelled to share it…The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt, is amazing. A somewhat long read but so worth it.

Fall…Ohhh…Me! Day 31

As the cooler weather begins to settle in (in some places), I find more and more time to spend reading. One of my favorite authors…Henry David Thoreau. On my list of reads for this fall and winter, The Maine Woods and a second reading of Walden. Over the next few days I am posting some of my favorite fall pictures that I captured while hiking in Tennessee, along with some of my favorite Thoreau quotes.
